Well - now that you boys and girls have taken your seats and are being polite to each other - the show can begin.
And what a show it is. This is Primal Dead, the motherlode, the seed crystal of everything the Dead ever were or could be. Style-wise, they are all over the map tonight. Blues, folk, country, R&B, rock, and something-else-trip-your-face-off music. It's all here, in spades.
Many groups during this period aspired to embody the "All-American music" heritage, and weave together the different roots of American music - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Band of course, Poco, NRPS and the Byrds.
None however, would do it as diversely, or as well as the Grateful Dead. Shows like this - where they can take you from Beta Gamma Star Cluster #25 all the way to acoustic guitars on the back porch - really showcase what the band was capable of in 1970.
This is an all time heavyweight classic show - and yet, the whole is greater than the parts. Individually, you can find better versions of many of these tunes in other 1970 shows. But taken together, this show is just overwhelming with great material. Not only the music, but the priceless banter between songs, esp. Jerry talking to the audience, is pure gold.
If you like Workingman's - well this bud's for you! Almost every song is here. And of course the 2 acoustic sets are stellar. How many shows can claim 2 complete St. Stephens??
Then the little rarities like a Minglewood encore, versions of Attics and Morning Dew, one of the last 2-part Crypticals, and the rare "muddy water" verse Jerry sings in the acoustic Rider.
This entire SBD show, with the NRPS sets, is available in SHN files, 6 CD's worth, at Grateful Danky Love, dotcom so go get it. Makes a real Danky Christmas gift.
Many of you will put up the tree this weekend. May I recommend this show - make an evening of it. Light the lights, light the candles and the lava lamp. Light the Nag Champa incense. Light your head!!! Settle back with some egg nog and your favorite person, and let the Dead do the rest!!
Happy Holidays everybody,
Dr. Flashback :-)

Aw hell doctor ... i'm still gettin' to your #8 pick! However, you've certainly chosen a monster show this time 'round. Lots of nuggets to get lost in, so a very cool choice. Well, the good doctor provided the LMA link, but let me add to his bounty and give you the link to where you can get that and a little something extra called NRPS:

And Max(imillion) ... i look forward to your review of the show!

Happy Holidays Everyone! Well, the Doc's suggestion with the X Mas Tree and Egg Nog got me thinking and missing back home. But, as soon as I fired up this classic masterpiece, all was well at the home front.

Can't explain this show in words - just like the Dead.

Yes, great show Dr. - long well known by regular perusers of this and other sites.

The list of recently reviewed shows above this forum just pointed out another great 1970 show I was happy to hear for the 1st time...

Jan. 2, 1970 (early and late) - it passes NotJim's "shower test", capn doubledose rates it essential+...
it offers a great set list combining the tried and true psychedelia with the new country songs of Workingman's.

Plus a killer Dark Star - outstanding.

BTW,
May I share a selection of favorite shows I've found here, thanks to reviews and forum posts leading from one to another.
I've bookmarked this diverse list of links to some truly great; and near-great sets - with enough diamonds in the rough to be deserving of replaying::

Yeah, your bookmarks are really cool Cream Puff, nice way to share what you most enjoy!

Typically I wait til about 10 songs into a long show to formulate an opinion about it, but wow, that slow, soulful I Know You Rider just made my day. Maybe made tomorrow too.

Thanks Doc.

This is too sweet. I have this show in my car right now, but I only have the Dead part of the show. So, to be able to get the entire thing is wonderful. Thank you Sir, a Grate way to start my day. This show is one of my favorites, when you said this show has a bit of everything, you pretty much nailed it. Peace and hang loose.

From one aging doc to another: how funny. Just finished downloading the shn files and burning the full copy (which will also fit on 6 cds) last weekend.

Thought I'd upgrade it.

Of course it's a damn great show! Six sets of Garcia at his best. Two on pedal steel, two acoustic, and two electric.

In those days, if you were a friend of a friend and the vibes were good and you kept yer mouth shut and pretended you were supposed to be there, you could catch both shows for the price of one. Problem was that you often had to hang backstage. Bummer!

I had tickets for the first show. I went down that night figuring that I'd probably be able to score one for the second show--it wasn't that hard to do. As fate would have it, I didn't have to. I was good friends with one of their longtime ushers, and he gave me an usher shirt to wear between sets.

So here I am, just turned 18, hanging backstage, watching everyone disappear downstairs and reappear like rabbits from a hat. Bobby chasing women, Pig chasing wine and women, Jerry chasing no one and nothing, just hanging out rapping with that funny laugh of his. Me, I'm practicing the shut up and look like yer supposed to be there stance when Jerry walks by and says hello--he always said hello to folks. What do you say in reply when someone like that acknowledges you? Do you simply smile? Say howdy in return? Make an ass of yourself? A ha! I chose the latter. WIthout any thought, I stuck out my right hand and said to him, "Slip me four and a half." Oops. He paused and looked at me eyes wide open, like I had just said the dumbest thing in the word. Then he extended his right hand, laughed, and obliged me. Slap! And then he was gone--off to tune up for the second show.

Any wonder that the second show was so much better than the first?

Hey Now Dr! - Thanks for the Rx. Take TWO Cumberlands and call me in the morning. OR, I'll have a Cumberland, make it a double....

Anybody know of other shows w/ 2 performances of the same song?? In this case, 1 acoustic, 1 electric. Too cool.

Sounds cozy. I just might try it.

Your words are always apropo, delicate and Hot-chocolatey.

You're a good man, thanks for the Picks.
